The day we adopted a Siames cat

The day we adopted a Siamese cat to our rural cottage in Scotland.
Our lives were pretty normal until that fateful day!
An American lady nearby had kept and bred Balanese / Siamese cats in her home which was a wing of a palatial traditional stone-built Scottish grand clan home. Huge gardens running down to the sea.

Anyhow, not sure how we heard of her but we did and off we went to explore the possibility of taking a kitten. When we arrived she showed us a few little ones and told us they were all sold, going off to London, Switzerland and other far fetched places.

There was one little boy who was 6 months old whom she fell in love with and intended to keep herself. He was a sort of a runt from a previous litter. He had health issues having just recovered from inexplicably losing all of his fur and looking like a Sphinx. After a lot of investigation the cause was revealed. It was the cat food she had given him which had an adverse effect on him.

He had, by now, regained all of his coat back. There was something about him that drew us in, we want to take him with us. The owner was very reluctant but our pleas were eventually heard. She gave in to us and off we went. Placing the little mite in a cat box and on the back seat of the car we endured his howling all the way home.

And so began a journey for all of us.

We kept his name as it was quite cute – ‘Moki’ had a unique sound to it and seemed really suited to a Siamese catThe day we adopted a Siamese cat. Not having children meant that he received an enormous amount of attention from day one.

It didn’t take us too long on deciding that he would go everywhere with us in the car, the shopping, the coffee shops, holidays, weekend breaks. Part of the family you could say.

Moki acclimatized to the car very quickly as you can see below, sleeping on the dashboard.

He never flinched at all nor did he get stressed. It was perfectly normal to go to Sainsbury’s with him to do the shopping. Of course he had to stay in the car. People were amazed when they saw a Siamese cat peering out of the window.

You will probably have gathered by looking at the photo’s he is a long haired version of a Siamese which is a lose term for a Balanese. His nose and face is not as chiselled as a traditional Siamese, more of a round shape.

I have to say that I was a big dog person having the pleasure of keeping German Shepherds and the move to keeping a Siamese cat was a pretty big transition for me. I like many others had a perception of cats being sneaky, crafty, lazy and grumpy and dangerous. All of which are true of course!
